Scholarly Research Project

By Erika M. Rosato

Dear BONS Members,

On behalf of BONS, I am informing you about a scholarly research project being done by one of our members. Erika M. Rosato, is pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree at the Bouve College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University. She wishes to inform you about her DNP scholarly quality improvement project that she will be introducing to you in November 2018 by email which will include a direct link to an informed consent and the online project. Her study has been approved by the Northeastern University Institutional Review Board (#18-10-10). The project will consist of a fifteen-minute web based educational session, preceded by a 5 minute on-line pre- survey and followed by a 5-minute on-line post survey and course evaluation. The purpose of this scholarly project is twofold. First, it is to educate oncology nurses on the impact of financial toxicity on oncology patients. Second, it is to enhance the role oncology nurses play in helping to ease the burden of financial responsibility. The aims of the study are to 1) Develop and implement an educational program for registered nurses regarding financial toxicity, 2) Describe nurses’ knowledge of financial toxicity through a pre and post education survey measurement tool and 3) Describe nurses’ confidence levels in addressing financial toxicity through a pre and post survey measurement tool.

You will be invited to participate in this survey because you are an oncology nurse who is a member of the Boston Oncology Nursing Society. You must be at least 21 years old to take this survey. The decision to participate in this quality improvement project is voluntary and refusal will in no way affect your membership. You do not have to participate and you can refuse to answer any question. Even if you begin the survey, you can stop at any time. Your decision whether or not to participate will have no impact on your BONS organizational membership. There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to you for taking part in this project. There are no direct benefits to you from participating in this project; however, your responses may help us learn more about nurse's understanding of financial toxicity, as well as the educational needs of oncology nurses. You will not be paid for your participation in this project. Upon completion of all parts of the study, you will be directed to a link to enter a raffle for a $50.00 gift card if you so choose.

Your part in this study will be handled in a confidential manner. Any reports or publications based on this quality improvement project will use only group data and will not identify you or any individual as being affiliated with this project.

If you have any questions about participating in this project, please feel free to contact Erika M. Rosato at 617-726-8564 (office phone) or Rosato.e@husky.neu.edu, the DNP student investigator. As this is a DNP project you can also contact Principal Faculty Investigator, Melissa Taylor, DNP, MPH, RN, CEN, CPEN at m.taylor@northeastern.edu if you have any other questions. The study will be available for five weeks, and one reminder email will be sent out during that time. There is no other follow up for purposes of this project.

Thank you for your consideration,
